Default problems after cleaning egr valve

I decided to clean my egr today as I haven't done it for over 6 months.
After fitting back to the car it was spluttering, smoking & wouldn't even rev
My heart nearly jumped out of my throat lol.
There was also no engine management or fault code showing.
Took it all appart again & pushed the egr spring to the closed posistion.
It seems to be ok now. And still no fault codes.
Does this mean my egr is stuck closed? As I'm not sure wether to replace it or not.

If you had to push it to the closed position then that means it was jammed open. They don't produce fault codes when jammed open. They will generate a fault code when jammed shut however as the ECU will detect low EGR gas flow.

Sounds like it was jammed open to me. That's what they normally do if they jam open - hamper performance badly. Conversely if they are jammed shut the will throw a fault code with the emissions light on the dash illuminated - but actually drive better at lower rpms.

badly isnt the word it would barely run & wouldnt rev.
i thought i had seriously broke it.
I didnt even try driving it, dont think it was driveable lol
Ive driven it for 5 miles ish 2night & gave it a good thrashing.
no light has come on as of yet.
does this mean the egr is still functioning correctly?

Probably or is mroe so in the closed position - ie enough to keep the light off but enough that the runs.

I have mine blanked off as the valve was a pain in the arse on my motor.
