confused Done a self service but mpg has dropped!!

I've recently carried out a self service on my signum 1.9cdti, it has an air lose problem somewhere near the alternator? Must be a cut hose or pipe??? What would be the easiest way to diagnose this as I can't seem to pin point it plus wouldthiss affect mpg? I was gettin 43-46 now I'm getting 29-31 ??

It's mainly when I accelerate but can hear it more clear when I'm going through the tunnel. A rattle noise from idle gets louder and faster when I start the car, just noticed this

A rattle noise when your idling suggest DMF is on its way out and an air loss noise sounds like an air loss from one of your boost hoses or vacuum pipes.

Just sprayed up the belt off the alternator with wd40 to try and grease up the mechanism and it eased off the noise - can the cover easily be taken off the siide of the engine to be serviced up? ( sorry about the terminology, all new to me this)
