    Default Cheap train tickets online

    hey guys,

Im needing to travel from Basingstoke(hampshire) to Newcastle upon Tyne(metro station) to buy a car from a member on here next sunday.Ive been to my local train station and they want £177 per person 1 way.

Ive looked online and Googled "cheap train tickets" and quite a few website came up and after a bit of form filling i can get a ticket for as little as £88 but im unsure how its all works regarding having a ticket in my hand.Im also a bit warey about doing this as im worried that its a scam and i wont actually be able to travel.

Has anybody used any of these type of website if so have they had any problem or better still can anybody reccomend a site so i can save some money

    Thanks

Your local station will simply provide the direct fare, they should search for the cheapest but it can take some time and research

Don't use trainline.com as they have an admin fee (ASA complaint against them recently about this)

Use one of the TOC websites
You are probably going to be travelling by East Coast so use theirs and save a further 10%
    eastcoast.co.uk

Also look at split tickets, which are quite legal (just make sure you leave the minimum connection time between services)
For example Basingstoke - London -Newcastle
You could also travel on the 08:18 Basingstoke - Newcastle (no change required) with split tickets, split at Birmingham and York

If you get a cheap ticket that involves multiple connections just make sure all the times allow you to get to your next train in time.

    Its like Russian Roullette sometimes.

Most cheap tickets wont give you a refund if you miss a train. You'll have to buy the remaining journey over again.

I had one once and I had 60 seconds to get my train in time. Another where I had to wait an hour and a quarter before the next one.... lol

    Justin, can I just say....

Its never a good idea to travel on a one way ticket to buy something. The seller knows this and it puts immense pressure on you to drive home in the car.

Ideally you want to be in a position to walk away if you need to, especially if you see or hear something you dont like on the day. At least make plans for a return journey so you have a Plan B.

    Just some advice thats all.

Try getting several tickets for the same journey, i.e. Basingstoke to Reading, Reading to Bormingham etc, it may work out cheaper.
I priced going to London one day and doing this saved me £40.
