    Default Return to motorcycles...

I've been chatting to my mates again and they've been trying to get me back on a bike as they're very active at the moment (Isle of Man, Track Days & various stuff).

I've got a full motorcycle licence (since November 1990) but havent riden properly for decades. Last ride out was on my mates Ducati 748 a couple of years ago. I usually hire bikes out on holidays also.

Anyways, I figured for a project I'd like to get my Institute of Advanced Motorists bike certificate (I've already got the car one).

Any thoughts or opinions on how I should best get back into the world of two wheels safely and correctly?

Go find a place where they teach Direct Access. Explain you have a licence, and want to go out on an assessed ride with the instructor. You will be amazed what you have forgotten, and how quickly a good instructor can get you back up to being a good rider.

I know a couple who have done this and recommend it anyone who has been out of the saddle for a number of years... Shouldnt cost too much either.

Could ask local police, I'm sure I've heard of courses for people that haven't ridden for years, then get back into it. I'll ask my brother in law, think he went on one.

I have always said that I would go for some refresher lessons when I return to two wheels! Oh how I miss my aprilia rsvr 1000 pretty sure I'll have another someday.

Another consideration is the weather .... Not the best time of year to be planning a revisit to motorcycling.....

Were always the first to remind each other that the weathers getting worse and to check brakes tyres etc and increase our braking distances ... And thatsnin our cars... And were driving those every day

Wait for next year and if your still serious take the advanced riders course..

The highest proportion of fatalities currently on motorcycles Is from "born again bikers"...not saying your going to become a statistic but it's a sober reminder that on a motorcycle you don't have to be wrong to come off worst..

And if you lose your licence .... You lose your car one too

0-Large smile ......every time it's driven

    Thanks guys,

I've just searched and found a local firm that specialises in refresher courses right through to Advanced Training which is what I want.

I'll have a chat with them and get some bike hire if possible. I want a Honda VFR 800 in white eventually, but want to make sure I dont drop it first!

I'm fairly level headed with things like this, so training and safety is top priority, followed by lots of fun. I love bikes, always have done but due to circumstances havent had the chance for years.

I'm right in the middle of 'born again biker' territory so need to take extra care.

Which VFR are you looking at? The Fi models or Vtec?

Thats Cheeky!! I know the older Vtecs are quite prone to faults, but i would suspect the new ones are pretty reliable these days.

Got an FiW myself, 88 model, and its reliable as they come, comfortable on long distance, and got a bit of a kick when i feel a bit fruity!!

    You'll love this one mate

    Hope so

My only concern is the transition from 8v to 16v. Dont want to much of a kick to unsettle it mid corner. But hopefully wont be too bad.
