    Default "Pinking" on a 2.2 Sri ???

My car seems to have developed a "pinking" noise when changing into a higher gear at lower revs (4th at 30mph and 5th around 40mph).When there is slight load on the engine, I can hear it.Took a auxhall mechanic out to hear it and he agreed that the noise DID sound like pinking. Car in yesterday and guess what ?............................no fault found.Said they Tech 2'ed it and no faults. Said it may have been "dirty fuel". Doubt it as I have used several Petrol Stations and the noise is there.Only seemed to be apparent after the 40K service. Not affecting driveability of the car, but annoying none the less.

Anyone else had this "noise" ?

Nope.. but not one to critise others driving style... but that is a bit early to be changing up..any cars knock sensor will have trouble retarding the igintion to cope with that load..

give the car a chance.. those 2.2's love to rev, so trying to pull 40 in 5th is hardly fair to it..

Appreciate the comments.I usually DO drive hard.It just concerned me that this noise only seemed apparent after the service.Sort of noticed it accidentally and then it grew into "paranoia". I'll just turn up the music now.Its been in to the Dealer and they told me there is nothing to worry about and its on record!!

have you been using supermarket fuel? ie tesco's etc? because my mate had this problem with his BMW and the guys in BM told him straight that he uses supermarket fuel, its supposed to be lower Octane even though the supermarket say its 95 RON, when he changed to esso etc... it sorted the pinking problem

Yep,agree with the above about supermarket fuel,a lot of people in the know say keep away from it as it hasn't the quailty of BP etc, which is why they can sell it so cheap

To be honest,I vary where I fill up as I have 70 mile round trip to work and pass numerous filling stations.I have probably used "Morrisons" a bit more in the last few weeks and recently I also added a Millers Fuel Treatment.Who knows?? From my nest empty tank,I will use BP or equivalent and see if it improves. Thanks again

Have a look at this thread, http://forum.vectra-c.com/showthread...referrerid=252 it may help if the dealer has changed your filter and it is breathing better now.

My 2.2 pulls smooth from those speeds especially 30mph in fourth. Its done about 26000 miles.
