Winter tyres - What do you do?

Hi all, just wondering how most of you approach this..

Do you buy Winter tyres of the same size and get them fitted to your existing alloys?

Or have any of you bought some cheapy steel wheels and fitted Winter tyres to those for easy changing at home?

I was considering the second option for this winter and possibly even going for 16" instead of 17's to try and save a bit on the tyres themselves...

Any opions greatly received!

Did think about 16" steelies but as they are not standard fit on an SRI, but listed as possible use in the handbook. However some insurance companies might consider them as a mod, so decided to stay with stock fitting.

I put my winters on my standard 17's and then fitted 20's for summer.

Of course this is another option - buy some more alloys and have a specific set for winter and summer....decisions, decisions....

I've never changed wheels or tyres for winter and don't plan to start now. Always managed and never had any problems. Although I've always fitted quality tyres so that may be why. This will be my first winter on non-branded tyre, but the Neuton NT5000's are winter rated so don't foresee any problems.

I've got standard 17" sri wheels with winter tyres for winter, and Insignia VXR Replica 18" for summer.

Agreed, simply make sure my front tyres have at least 4mm of tread from the first snowfall onwards
Only problem I have had is when the snow depth is such that the front of the car cannot clear this and grounds the car (or as at last year such that the snow was up to the roof)

I have never changed tyres but have had severe issues, I live 2/3 way up a 1:8 hill in a town in a valley with a steepish climb on every exit.
My wife had to abandon her car so I plan to fit one of them with winter tyres this time probably only fronts onto 16" structure rims for the duration.
