Default 2002 2.2 vectra elegance .broken auto gearbox

Hi, my name is Dave this is my first post on here

Just so you all know I do the work to all of my cars myself and have been a mechanic for 9 years so I know what you other mechanics are talking about its not mumble jumble and I don't need laymans terms

I just bought a vectra c its automatic and has tiptronic on the gearstick. The car came to me without a gearbox or a torque convertor as the guy had it removed from a garage because sometimes it would drive and sometimes it wouldn't, upon reading posts on the net I can see that the cause may of been caused by coolant in the gearbox fluid. My question is. . .

Is it definatly an AF23 that's needed for this car?

Can I use a seperate cooler for the fluid to run through and mount it infront of the existing coolant rad so that in theary later on in life the same coolant/atf can not mix as its not connected?

I have a small auto gearbox oil cooler here from a different car will this be ok to plumb in?

What is the problem with the breather hose getting water in it? I don't have a gearbox here to look at.

    Thanks for all responses

    Dave.

I had phoned but you wasn't in, i'll try again later, I'm having trouble loacating a gearbox that works, is there another car that the af23 can be taken out of? Is there a way to repair the faulty gearbox?

i just spoke to the garage that it came from and asked why the gearbox wasnt put in the boot his reply was (because i couldn't lift it) im thinking (pu$$y) lol!

he said he will either get it sent to me or i'll have to pick it up. anyone travelling from luton to essex clacton on sea some dollar in it for you if you are

i asked what was wrong with the gearbox he said "i don't know, we took it out because the owner told us to" and "when the oil came out is was really black and that it hadn't been tested for faults" the owner said to me that the car would sometimes drive and then sometimes it wouldn't and that's all i know. maybe it can be put back in with fresh oil to see what is actually going on and then diagnose the fault. what do you think? shall i get the gearbox and put it back in the car to find out what has actually gone wrong?

ive tried sourcing one but second hand ones are all broken, if i can make a seperate oil cooler for this then i would be onto a good reliable car, it had a new 2.2 engine fitted under warranty 10k ago

I have the original gearbox now and I've got the torque convertor, I'm thinking about putting it back in the car to actually run some tests to see what's working and what isn't, I'm sure this would give a bettter idea of what works and what doesn't, i'll report back during the week after its all running again.

Any tests I can do with the box out of the car? I already know that when turning the diff round with both drive shafts in the box and using the selector the gears work properly with no crunching or grinding noises, my guess then is an electrical fault or an issue with the fluid or tourqe convertor, I know there is valve in the front section of the gearbox but want to know if I can take the cover plate off and test the operation of the valves and maybe clean out the oil galleries. Any siggestions?

I've removed the transmission solenoids from behind the front cover on the gearbox, there was oil and water mix inside the casing, there isn't a lot of it in there but it noticable and probably caused by the radiator leaking into the auto transmission fluid, most of the atf was dark red, I'm going to try and get to the filters and see the condition of them, id like to test the solenoids to see if there doing what they are suposed to, I have a multimeter and a 12volt battery to test but I'm unsure of exactly how to test, I'm not at gearbox expert just a mechanic so any help would be great, if all is ok with solenoids and a new filter/s then i'll put it back in and modify a seperate cooler for the fluid.

It is a very lively forum, but maybe this area isnt in anyone's expertise , and i havent seen a "how to" either

So maybe thats why there is lack of response

Considering signumkid asked you to call for advice,i would have said that was a good response to your original thread

oh the joys! ive put the gearbox in twice now lol, i'll get tot the bottom of it sooner or later! ive had the gearbox apart and found a 'band' was not located securley so i sorted that out but the car still wont drive, put it in 'D' or any other gear and it does not move,

next step is to remove the gearbox again and take apart the pump assembly to see if anything is broken, no other signs of anything being broken inside the box though, fiction plates are all fine, condition of the band is good, all teeth are good, i'll keep things posted on here. BRB! lol
