Question Speedo/Rev/Fuel Dials die then come back

Hi, Just new to this forum.

Just bought a Vectra C Elite yesterday. When its cold the dials die off only to come back on when you flick the key back and forward.

The problem is the same as described in this thread:
    http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showth...roblems&page=1

As I've read it looks like something to do with the CIM.

I sourced a few on ebay:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr...All-Categories

Does anyone know which one would be suitable? Do I need to take it to a main vauxhall dealer to get fitted?

Any help would be great as I know hee-haw about car electrics!

    Cheers

    Anyone?

Theres numerous threads on here about it but the issue im having is slightly different.

Speedo/rev/fuel/temp dials flick up and down and totally die about every 5 mins along with the radio, trip computer display and the rear brake lights stay on, cruise control dies and indicators do not work - basically everything electric dies until the ignition is switched off and back on quickly. This can obiviously be dangerous when driving as not only do I not know what speed im doing but the power steering resets itself when the ignitiion is switched so its very hard to steer for about 5 seconds. The ABS and BATTERY light come on in the dash.

I've tried cleaning the contacts on the ABS connector behind the battery with WD40 but this did not fix it.

A long shot but try getting the alternator tested. If they start to overcharge or aren't kicking out enough juice they can send the electrics mad.

Does sound like CIM fault mate.

Doesn't need to be a dealer to fit it. Just need a new one and your security code.

I have option on my snap on diagnostics so I'm sure most garages will be able to

as said it sounds like a cim but as cont 1204 says to i have heard a faulty alternator can cause all sorts of crazy stuff including the dashboard flickering on and off

    Hi,
I took it to an auto electricians place today and they diagnosed it as the CIM as they couldnt read from the CIM with whatever diagnostic software they were using. Is the ABS module plug the one right above the battery cover, but not the one jammed up against the top?

I will check the fuses tomorrow when its light.

I'm not sure if the place checked the alternator, I will check tomorrow.

Where can a new CIM be purchased? I can only see these second hand ones on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr...All-Categories

On second thought, has anyone ever tried one of these 3rd party car warranties? and it says they cover the ECU, does this include the CIM?

Cheers for all your input guys

Hi, I contacted a place called Vauxcomm in east kilbride.
To supply the new CIM unit with all the tech 2 in and out they are wanting 500+VAT!!!!??

They said it costs 300 just for the part. They said I could get a second hand one off ebay thats been tech2 cleared that matches the ident code for mine and they could program it but if it didnt work id still have to pay for all the labour.

Just phoned the local Vauxhall dealership aswell and they want 530+VAT to fit it. So basically Im talking 600 odd for 1 fault!

I wish i'd never bought it privately - the ******* that sold me it convinced me it was a mickey mouse repair job

Does anyone at all know of a cheaper way of doing it?

Hullo, check the price on that CIM unit, megavaux had one a few weeks ago for about 100, and my local main dealer were only charging 280 inc vat for a new one fitted.

Alas my problem was the dasboard itself had died....

Update - checked fuses 17 and 26 today on the passenger door side of the dashboard and no success
If the place I took to to get diagnosed told me it was the CIM, they mustve checked all this surely?
