I currently own a Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 SRI Petrol (2006). Having broken down the other day and having the car recovered to a local garage, I was told that the gearbox was gone and I would need a new one. The garage also suggested changing the clutch while they were changing the gearbox (even though he said I didn't have to).
He came back with a price of £675 for the gearbox change with labour and £850 if he changed the clutch as well. This is obviously with an old gearbox which only has a 30 day guarantee. He said it would cost £1900 for the same jobs if I had a re-conditioned gearbox. Not sure how much for a new one.
My questions are:-
1. Is £675 & £850 (with clutch) reasonable prices to be paying for a 2nd hand gearbox with labour?
2. Same goes for £1,900 for a re-conditioned gearbox with labour?
3. Should I get an old gearbox, re-conditioned gearbox or a completely new one?
We are not made of money, and this has come as quite a shock to us because the car was only Serviced and MOT'd last week!!! So ideally we do not want to spend a fortune fixing the car but at the same time, we don't want it to break down again in a couple of months because we took the wrong option.
My knowledge of cars is very limited, PLEASE HELP
