    Default MOT on Thursday

    Hey guys

My Veccy has it's first MOT under my ownership on Thursday. Previous MOT was passed with no advisories.

Work done this year includes rear shockers and upper arms, all four springs changed, new wipers, and back box welded.

Car seems ok with no play in any wheels, etc, and barely any smoke when booted hard (2.2 DTi). Underside looks clean and solid.

Car has done 16k miles since last MOT.

Anything else you guys think I should check for?

I always take my car to the local authority testing station where they do the taxis. Its only £35 and they do a fair test and aren't looking to fail you on things to pick up a bit of work. Last car went through 5 years on the trot no problems

I always take mine to a place that ONLY does MOT's and nothing else. It's made a massive difference to my cars failure rates...

Started the car this morning, and the exhaust knocked against the underside of the car as it fired up. Was only doing it on start-up though, not when driving.

Sod's law when the MOT is getting done tomorrow

Just replaced the rubber mounts on the back box, as they were, worn, to say the least. No knocking on start-up now

Well I took the car for it's MOT this morning.

On the way there, thought I'd give it a good thrashing to clear it out, for the emissions test. As I red-lined it, the car jolted violently and went into limp mode, and remained there. A quick look under the bonnet and I saw nothing obvious.

Took it in for the test and mentioned that the spanner light was on. The lad says "that's no problem, just means you're due a service" Ok I said, no probs.

Went to pick it up. It failed. No mention of the spanner light, but it failed as the outer CV boots are held on with cable ties, rather than the metal clips. Even though they are not leaking or split!

Got home, on checking everything over in detail, the spanner light turned out to be a loose connection on the plug to the EGR. Sorted in seconds by pushing it back on

So £20 lighter, I'm now faced with the task of changing the CV boots. Going to change the boots and clips, as they came as a kit from Euro Car Parts.

Has anyone else had MOT problems for this?

woudnt it just be easier to get some metal clip to secure the cv boots?

I had this on a prevous car and 2 metal jubilee clips and it was sorted

Just going to change the clips with the ones from the boot kit. On inpection, they're not leaking oil and not split or perished. Never thought of jubilee clips to be honest!!
