    Default Changing tyre sizes..

I currently have 215/50/17 fitted and am intending changing all 4. I know the recommended alternative is 225/45/17 but what would happen if i were to fit 215/45/17 instead?

looking on a tyre size calculator,, the difference is 3.2% it will make your speedo read LOW, ie, with 215- 45s your speedo will read 2.2 mph SLOWER,

As the 215/45/17 isn't the alternate recommended size, you'll need to inform your insurer for starters.

But that would be true for any size other than the standard 215/50/17 wouldn't it as that is the only size recommended by the manufacturer. AFAIK 225/45/17 is only recommended by forum users to give the same radius as standard.

The 225/45/17 is given as the alternate size in the Vectra / Signum handbook.

    The 225/45/17 isn't the same rolling radius as the 215/50/17. It's a -1.93% diffference.

The 215 has a radius of 323.4 mm
The 225 has a radius of 317.15 mm

That's why the speedo will slightly over-read with 225/45/17's fitted.
i.e. you'll be going very slightly slower than what the speedo is indicating.

If you plug the sizes into a tyre calculator you'll see the differences.

    Hardly noticeable, if at all.

    You're talking 6 mm difference.

(note to myself:- I really must update those photos sometime with a 225/45/17 tyre on the rear as comparison.)

Well ... I notice it.... it's the same as having brand new tyres to completely bald ones. 12mm or half an inch overall diameter on the whole wheel / tyre
