Vehicle : Vectra c SRI Facelift

    Trim : SRI

    Engine : 1.9 CDTI 150

    Year : 2006

Default Need honest opinions on 8v 120BHP

Right guys i really need some sound advice so any help would be great.

My budget is £3,000 and ive got 2 option:

    1.9cdti 16v 150bhp engine or 1.9cdti 8v 120bhp engine

After spending hours and hours searching the internet, local papers and driving around its become clear that theres a heck of a lot more 8v 120bhp cars forsale and the more powerfull 150bhp.

For my budget i would get a 16v 150bhp with between 110-140k miles on the clock, some history and lower spec i.e. life or club

    or

    A 8v 120bhp with less miles(80-90k on the clock),FSH and higher spec.

For me the 8v 120bhp seems the most sensible option due to getting a better condition car but im worried i will regret buying one because of the lower bhp and torque.I havnt driven the 120bhp yet but i have driven my mates 16v 150 and i was very impressed with the power thoughout the gears.Im not a speed freak and whatever i buy will be used for transporting the misses and 18month old baby daughter about but i would like to know that i have some power there if i needed to put my foot down.

My prevous car was a 1997 VW passat 1.6 petrol with 100bhp and it was slow as hell which i put down to it being a big car but a small 8v engine and dont want to make the same mistake again. On the other hand a mate of mine has a VW Golf TDI which has a 8v engine but is like poo off a shoval

Is there really that much differance between the 2 engines?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions

The 1.6 petrol will have far far less torque than the turbodiesel (either the VW TDI, or the 1.9 120 engines), so the driving characteristics will be like chalk vs. cheese.

Another option would be to get the 120 engine and spend a few hundred quid on a decent remap, or decent tuning box - the DTUK ones have a lot of fans here.

The 120 engine will readily map to 150, though I'd personally be a little wary of someone offering vastly more than this upgrade... not to say that it can't be done... that's just my personal feelings

The wife has a 120 which is fine, the torque is very nice and it pulls away pretty quick, there will obviously be a noticeable difference between the 150 and the 120 but if it is just for transport then I would go for the lower miles rather than an extra 30 BHP.

Either way make sure you check for the common faults from both engines before buying. If you have a quick search on here you will be able to find out what these are.

for you budget you wont get a late 16v 150, these seem to have most of the common faults recitfied, and buying a high millage early one is asking for trouble IMO

the 8v still has enough guts to pull the car and if you ever did want a little more, you can always stick a box on it to bump it up to 150bhp, plus you will get alot more for you money

I have the 120 8v and can honestly say that it's more than capable of getting a move on if it needs to. Still 6-spd 'box and CC so still a capable car.

Mate, my uncle has the 120 in an 03 Vec and he swears by it.

i have the 150 in a sig, and to be honest after being in his, theres not all that much in it.
you wont be dissapointed in the 120, but just do your research on the car because i know my uncle had a few problems with his (mechanical wise)

I had this exact dilemma in May of this year.

Bought a 120, which a mate with a 150 says is unoticable to his.

Only done the airbox mod so far, but will be having a remap in the next month or so, as my job now needs me to do motorway miles more, and the remap should give good mpg at motorway speeds.
