Default Strange electrical problem - please read & help.

    Guys,

The Siggy is getting what seems to me like a really strange electrical problem.

I have noticed a couple of times that when I engage first gear and take off, the car almost wants to cut out (and has done a couple or times) and then if I stop and accelerate its fine. This happened to me on Friday and it actually cut out (usually on a warm'ish start may I add.

I also noticed that my central display was slightly flickering. I had my mates in the car at the time and they said it was me and that the lights werent flickering.

Anyway, same thing just happened now about 15 mins ago. I took off and it almost cut out on me. I kept it going and continued driving but now my central display is flickering lightly and the stereo keeps cutting out, almost as though someone is turning it on and off every 15 seconds.

After about 2 miles of driving, its fine and the display stops flickering.

No EML/problem lights. My first thoughts were alternator buts its had one about 6 months ago.

    What could this be.

Please help. Winters coming, wife sometimes drives the car, dont want it getting stranded.

    Thanks.

    Bye bye Vec B

I noticed you said the alternator was done recently BUT i would check it is charging properly as it sounds like it could be that.

That im not to sure off any mechanic will be able to check it with a multi-meter and tell you if its charging properly and it will take about 2 minutes.

If it was a new alternator you should have a years warranty on it aswell.

Check voltage at the alt and battery.

Is it only when it's warm it's doing it?

You can check it using the following (with the engine running) on the following thread: http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55096

The voltage should be reading around 14.2, if the alternator is charging properly. My mechanic found that it was only achieving 13.8 and the provided an additional cable from the alternator to the battery. This solved the problem.

Does it when its cold or slightly warm. When hot it seems OK,

    Vehicle : Insignia Tourer

    Trim : Elite

    Engine : 2.0 CDTI (160ps)

    Year : 2010

Just stick a multimeter across the battery with the engine running and everything electrical switched on (lights, heated screen, etc etc), if it's still making at least 13v then the alternators fine. Switch everything off and leave the engine running and re-check, it should then be up to 14v+
