Default quoted £1500 for this repair.

Hi please look at my other post here and tell me how the guy has come up with his quote. He has gone to mercedes which is fine but they want £1500 saying because I scratched the wing and it needs a whole respray. Does £1500 seem too excessive ? Please reply as I need to work out if I pay or use insurance. My insurance is already £2k per year as I've only been driving really for 2 years.

    Thanks

Sounds like the owner does not want the repair blended, so the only solution would be a complete respray
As above, always ask for at least 3 quotes
However, it sounds like you will have no choice but to go through insurance as no doubt this person will claim agianst you in the future as the matter was never closed (and this is a well known issue near the three year limit)

I had to have the rear bumper done on my ex-Vec-B and that cost me £180.

Going to Merc they would be rubbing their hands together, new bumper, trims and repair and paint on bumper and all the quarter.

I would have thought MAX £700, seems crazy.

    As everyone says, 3 quotes.

a new merc rear bumper sprayed to his colour, possible respray of the rear quarter panel and mercedes labour charges plus VAT it could quite easily get that high..

Having now looked at the damage on the Merc, looks like they want to do what my claims have been
This is typically a complete new bumper, rather than repair, as very rarely will a main delear consider a repair
On my Vectra B this was £700
On my Mondeo Mk3 this was £810
On my Vectra C this was £1100

I have also had a bumper repair on my Vectra C and that cost me £210
The insurance quote (for the same work) was £685, again this included a complete new bumper

I went to a mercedes body shop and showed them pictures and was quoted £850 so I'm gonna get back to the guy with my quote. If I go through insurance how bad could it be? I don't have any no claims bonus so won't lose any. I asked they guy to take cash as i was thinking around the £500 but of it is creeping into the £1000 then I may as well use my insurance after thats what its there for right? ( my insurance excess is £500 alone)

If you have comprehensive policy then all you pay is the excess (probably minimum plus age)
The damage on your car then be included
You may also be entitled to a hire car whilst your is being repaired

If you only have TPF&T (very unlikely) then all you pay is the excess, but it only pays for the damage to the third party, any damage on your vehicle is not included

The policy will then show one claim, at fault
I suggest you try getting some quotes and compare, typically it will add 10% as it is only one claim in 5 years
The difference comes where you have NCB, as the difference is larger than 10% plus the stepdown in NCB
Basically you have nothing to lose

I have 10 years protected NCB and have made three claims without any affect
Equally, in my first year of insurance I wrote a car off and it made no difference to the premium on the next car
