Default Long Live the Vectra C – The Y22DTR is dead

    Hi all,

Been a little while since I was on as I’ve moved house and no broadband so writing from work. I’m sad to say that my Vectra is no more. On Wednesday eve bringing another car load from Taunton my engine expired in a massive bang, huge clouds of while smoke and then the wheels locked up. When I got the car to a stop and the smoke had cleared from behind there was a big oil slick on the road and some engine parts scattered across the highway.

After the smoke has stopped billowing out from the bonnet and grill and the RAC had arrived we popped the bonnet. Needless to say there wasn’t much of the engine left. The timing chain had let go at about 3.5k and both camshafts have buckled and ripped out of the seats, the left pulley was in bits on the road and timing chain has slashed its was through the pipe work making a total mess in the engine bay.

It’s due in tomorrow to be looked at by the insurance assessor but I’m sure they are going to write it off as a new engine would be much more than I paid for the car. If it can be fixed then I’ll keep it but if not I’m still going for another one but not sure which engine.

No picks as the car was taken to a local garage and I haven’t seen it since.

    I’ll update when I can.

Not a thing. I had just fixed two damaged wires on the boost sensor plug and the car has been running like a dream for the first time in ages. It was under foot down conditions as I had just joined a dual carriageway and an almighty bang and metal grinding noises.

It had covered 110k miles even on a full service history, so just goes to show really you need to check your cam chain as the miles go up.

If you are considering getting a replacement engine it may be worth having a look at these guys , currently showing 3, 2.2 dti in stock for breaking

Worth a bash. I'll have to wait for the insurance people but I'll e-mail the details to them and see what they are going to do. I've spent loads of money and time on this car so I would rather keep it than have to start again!

    Thanks for the help

Sorry if this is a daft question, but why are the insurance involved for a damaged engine, if no accident was involved?

Well I can't afford to do it and insurance is not just for accidents. They need to assess the car and then they will let me know what if any options I have.
