    Default Damn spanner light again.

Hi guys, just lately most times I start the car the spanner light comes up just after starting the engine. It goes out after a few seconds or if I rev the engine.

I have read somewhere that it might be glow plugs starting to play up.

Does that sound correct or might it be something else?

    I have a 04 reg 2.0DTI.

    Cheers
    Kenny

It does indeed point to glow plugs (low voltage). I'd still get the codes read just to make sure

I'd be interested to know the outcome of this too. My 04 20.DTI Zafira with the same engine does a similar thing. When cold starting (and not every time, but most) the spanner light comes on and goes out after a few minutes. Does not happen at startup when the engine is warm/hot. Need to read the codes at the weekend I think... The car still drives fine

Doesn't make a difference. The ECU checks for resistance in the plugs meaning if it detects too much resistance it'll show up the fault light. If it's only one thats gone then the other three will start the car with no problem.

It may get worse when the colder weather comes though

    Hi all,
    An update here.
Still getting the spanner light. It is coming on for longer now, but only comes on when the engine is cold.
The car is starting fine, admitedly we haven't had very cold weather yet, but not quite as well as it usually does. The engine usually starts very well, even in sub-zero conditions I have been impressed. Typically about 2, sometimes 3, turns of the engine and it will spring into life, now it is 4-5 turns.
This definately seems like a glow plug issue to me. I have ordered new glow plugs which with luck should be here today. If they are I will change them tonight and post back, otherwise I will change them on Wednesday.

The p0380 code is indicative of a glow plug fault , Kenny when you come to change the plugs make sure the engine is warm and to spray some wd40 around the top of the threads before attempting to remove .
I say this because it is pretty easy to break these plugs best way is to get yourself a deep 10mm socket a long extension bar and just a small ratchet and slowly apply pressure to the thread, this will work fine on three of the plugs the 4 th one being under the turbo pipe can be a pain to get too.
Best remove the pipe along with engine cover to give you access even then you may not be able to get the extension bar in place and will have to just chance it with just the socket and ratchet .

I haven't had the fault codes read and the method listed on here to get them doesn't work for my car for some reason.
I know a bit about engines and the behaviour alone is enough to make me suspect glow plugs.
Sadly the new glow plugs did not arrive yesterday as planned, but instead arrived this morning. With luck I will get chance to replace them tomorrow and will report back then.
Thanks for the tips on removing them, butI am pretty good with this sort of thing so I am not expecting to have problems unless they are seriously stuck.

    Regards

    Kenny

    Hi All,
Good News!! Didn't change my glow plugs last night because I remembered left some tools at my parents. So changed them this evenin and all is well.
Engine may have still been a little warm, but I am sure it had cooled enough for the damn spanner light to come on if there was still a problem. Will check again in mornin when it is completely cold, but I am sure it is all ok.

    On to the other problems.....

    Kenny
