Default Cam belt on Z19DT 120bhp CDTI help

I was wondering if I have screwed somthing up bad. I managed to put the crank shaft drive belt pully on the wrong way. This locked/slowed down the crank shaft when I tryed to start her up. (yep I know big balls up) The engine turned a bit but did not fire up then locked up. I striped the drive belt and drive belt pully off. Then I tryed the manualy turn the engine but it locks up after a bit of movemet.

Should I be able to turn the engine via the crank or dose comprestion stop you?

Would the cam bet have sliped bending the valves just with the starter?

Is the starter motor only linked to the fly wheel/crank shaft?

If the belt has just sliped witch way do I move it back?

Dose one turn of the crank = 2 turns of the cam?

Thanks for any help. Spanner time and looking after a 3 year old do not mix..never mind

sounds like you have broken the bottom cambelt pulley id say the wood ruff key has broken allowing the crank to turn and not the belt allowing the timeing to go out to be fair mate sounds like you have not got a clue what you are doing very brave to change a belt .........

defanetly sounds like the woodruf key , after putting the pulley on the wrong way mate not as simple as one revalution of the crank is two of the cam mate the zdt engines arent safe engines ie if the timing is out alot it prob will do damage to valves and stuff, you should of took it to someone hat knows what thay are doing , if you lived closer i woulld have took a look at it for you lol......

you should feel some resistance as it gets to the top or bottom of the stroke but it shouldn't "lock up"

why did you remove the crank shaft pulley?.... did not think you had to remove it if just changing the belt

    Thanks for everybody advice.
The crank shaft drive belt pulley has to be removed to get the cam belt off on the 120bhp. Is there a way of testing if the cam belt pulley wood ruff key is bust without taking the pulley off?

Hi, Sorry, apologise if I have got the wrong end of the stick, just a couple of questions to clarify exactly what you have done

1.Which pulley did you put on the wrong way? Do you mean the auxillary belt pulley on the crankshaft?
    2. When you tried to start it up was the new timing belt fitted correctly?
    3. Was the pulley that you wrongly fitted making contact with the engine casing - preventing it from turning
    4. Before you tried to start the engine had you refitted the auxillary belt or did you try without.
    5. Have you refitted the pulley the right way and tried turning the engine.

What you need to do is remove the cambelt, and then remove the cambelt pulley from the crankshaft - you will see if the woodruff key has sheared - replace the key and the pulley and then refit the belt. Another thing to consider is removing the glowplugs to reduce the compression and give you a lot more feel when trying to turn the engine by hand.
    Good luck with it

    Thumbs up Now fixed

Thanks all sorted not. Stripped the belt off and started again. Turned the engine over by hand and by the stater motor and it all still lined up. Also the water pump now dose not leak (the original reason I did the belt). Still a lucky one. I will try and give myself more time in the future. Now onto the stripped sump bolt for the oil change. Grinder time me thinks
