Default Best option for high mileage

Iím looking for a bit of guidance.

There is a strong possibility that a position may come up in my work. The problem is that it will be a round trip of 120 miles each day (I donít want to relocate at the moment).

I recon I would be looking at around 30 - 35k miles a year (including my domestic miles)

My question relates to what the best car option would be.

Changing from the GSi would be a given as the fuel costs (potential savings) is a no-brainer

A diesel it likely to be the best option but Iím thinking of issues like running costs (servicing intervals etc.) and depreciation with high miles on the car (I donít fancy paying £10k Ė £12k and ending up with nothing in 3 years approx. 100k miles).

The drive is likely to be mixed (1/3 motorway, 1/3 good B road and 1/3 single lane with passing places [which can be Ďinterestingí in the winter] . Iím not sure if a baby 4x4 would be practical for a high mileage Ė Iíve always had a soft spot for the Nissan Tonka-Toy (X-trail).

The job is only a possible at the moment but I would be spending a significant amount of time (about 1.5hr each way) travelling and would like something that can overtake and it comfortable/fun to drive.

Persoanlly I think the ideal would be something like a 2.2 Diesel Vec with a few years and not many miles on (although I know this may be quite difficult to find) that has already taken the main hit of depreciation and wont look too bad in 3 years time as it would already be a few years old so the mileage would look more 'normal'.

    Just my thoughts though.

Cheers for your thoughts Dave, I would like to stick with vaux (I have always had one) but the depreciation scares me (but that may be the case with all the usual suspects).

I suspect low mileage diesels, a few years old, are a bit like rocking horse do-do.

To be honest when you are doing that sort of mileage I think you just have to accept that the car becomes a consumable I bought my last Vec Elite 2.2Dti with 9k on the clock at 9 months old; the car was £23500 new and I got it for £13500 I then ran it for two and a half years and clocked 60000 miles on it. I got £5500 trade in for it against my new vec ... and to be honest I didn't mind (too much) £8000 over 2 1/2 years considering that the car was reliable, comfortable and a pleasure to drive over that time in addition to giving me great fuel economy and bags of space.

    Just my thoughts though

ur best bet is to look at the cars that hold there value even at high mileage bmw voltswagen audi.
    or just buy a veccy 1.9cdti 150

    As Dave said..

if you are going to hit over 100K in 3 years, just treat the car as a consumable.. keep the GSI and get a cheap Vec B DTi.. capable car, and if you get a late one for the right money it will save in depreciation while not being too old to require constant attention..

Bought my 2.0DTi for 6.5k two years ago with 35k on the clock, its now up to 86k and only worth 2.5k trade in value!!!!!!!

Therefore - as I got a bargain in the first place, I'm gonna run it and run it till costs too much to repair etc...

Dunno how thats helps you, but its my tuppence anyway!!
