    Default Water pump or thermostat?

    Evening all,

    The problem is that the car coolant gets to over 100deg pretty fast, the fans come on and the coolant isn't flowing back into the header tank. The heaters are also only blowing cold.

    What do you think it could be - Thermostat, water pump or both?

    The car is on 140K and had the pump last changed with the cambelt etc at 80K. The thermostat is the original.

    Coolant will always get back to the expansion tank even if the thermostat failed closed as there is a bypass pipe which allows it circulate until the thermostat opens. Sounds like the pump has failed. Check the bottom hose return from the radiator when the fans kick in, if its still cold id nearly put money on a failed pump.

    Oh well, that's tommorow sitting in the house watching daytime TV then! I may as well get drunk tonight then as i'll be going nowhere tommorow
    I'll call the AA out on Tuesday morning then, as i guess i shouldn't drive it in case it fails dramaticlly and takes the cam belt out.
