    Default Car wash (abuse)

Iím just back from my 1st visit to one of our remote sites. Access is via a farm and there was a serious amount of cow **** on the track.

Thankfully it was a hire car but the sides were splattered with the cr@p.

If Iím washing the car away from home I normally use a jet wash, I decided to put the car through the automatic carwash (for two reasons 1. It was a hire car and 2. worried about splatter washing it off with pressure washer).

Anyway on to the point, I have not used a car wash for years and I had completely forgotten the battering and abuse it give the car.

The carwash is a quick solution but donít/donít/donít do it unless it is a last resort

Indeed! I've never, ever put my current car through a car wash. Did the same as you a little while back (put a hire car through one) and jeez, as you say, they take a beating!! The whole car shakes!!

Yip, definitely wonít be doing that in my own car.

D, recon you champion detailers could make a bit of money by having flyers/handouts available for people to take when they drive out these things

like D....i've never put the car through a carwash and don't ever intend, i'd prefer for it to be dirty!!

i used to have a volvo s40 which i used to mistreat and put through the carwash on occasion, really regretted this one time as i had the radio on the car whilst going through and completely forgot about the electric aerial still sticking up!! £10 to replace the stalk....expensive carwash!

Last two new cars the dealers (toyota & VX) expressly told me to NOT use car washes as is damages the painwork.

I never hand wash my cars. Always use the car wash, and have never noticed any damage to the paint at all. I think that's an old wife's tale, from my experiences anyway. Modern carwashes have come on a long way.

    Viva la Car wash..

ahem.........I think Ste if you look closely you'll find there is damage to your paintwork and that comes with an absolute guarantee .........carwashes may have come a long way but put it this way if a sponge even when being used carefully can damage paintwork then it's a sure fire certainty that these brushes that are used on all sorts of cars and are never cleaned WILL pick up dirt and that dirt will pound you paint and therefore cause damage

I agree with Ste. I have used auto washes for years on all my many Vauxhalls and never been concerned about their paintwork as never had, or noticed, any problems and it has certainly never detracted from the price when selling or trading in. I have never had any comments from car dealers about the condition of my cars paintwork. So I reckon if you are short of time then get in the auto wash and get it done !! Afterall its only a car

It's not going to. A car wash doesn't 'damage' the paintwork such that it's going to make it unsaleable or reduce the price. It's when you get close and look at the surface etc. you'll see just how much swirl marks etc. the brushed cause. If you looked at a properly detailed car and one that has only gone through car washes, you'll see a huuuuuge difference. It's all down to whether having a nicely detailed car is your thing, or not.
