    Default power steering signum prob

hi, my light on my dash has come on a couple of times, firstly showing the traction light and then a pic of the steering wheel with an exclmation mark, everything seems to be working fine although the sterring has gone stiff once or twice but always goes ok again,

any ideas? also where is the power steering fluid? is it the one under the drivers wheel arch? if so hows the best way to top it up? seems a very strange place to put it if that is it.

    anyone have any ideas?

any help or advice really appreciated.

    car is a 3.2 signum elite 2004

    cheers

First thing check the level and as you've said it's in the wheel arch, you can just about get the bottle in there to top up

When it happens again check if the self cancelling function of the indicators work. Based on what you have said I'm pretty sure it won't and if this is the case, then your problem is 100% a faulty CIM.

What's involved in changing the cim? Is it a easy job?

    How often is it happening?
It happened three times on mine, took a photograph the second time, and drove it straight into the dealership (with the engine still running) the third time

Agreed, CIM failure if the power steering is still working
New module required, both keys will also require reprogramming (which is pretty much a dealer only job)
    Costs about £250 all in

If you don't have any warranty cover then buy the AA repair breakdown cover
Take a photograph of the display next time it happens, this will show the mileage
Phone the AA and advise the engine is still running so it can be diagnosed and reported for repair
All you will then need to pay at the dealership is the £25 excess, job done
