    Default handbrake return spring????

hi all, out fartin about with my car as my handbrake on the os/f sticks on. so stripped it all down and freed it up as it was siesed. but i think its all free but when you put the hand brake on and release it it still wont disengage properly.

the spring looks ok pleanty of springyness in it if that makes sense. still feels ok.

is this an issuse of it not being strong enough any more, or do i need to free up the mechinisim on the caliper a bit more?

cheers in advance its doing my heed in!

    Tim

didnt know what else to call it lol

it seems fine tho. does the spring have to pull the handbrake cable back thru?

it goes 90% of the way then i need to tap it with a small hammer to relese it the rest of the way. highly annoying!

are you on about the grommet that sits in the round housing of the arm or the cable actually going through the grommet, Is the grommet seated properly, seems like a binding issue, try WD40 or release handbrake grease cable, engage handbrake and do the same, then just on off on off on off the get the lubrication in, thats all i can think of matey...

no the cable is seated correctly, its just the mechinisim where the cable connects to the caliper and there is a spring on the otherside of it to help the cable be pulled thru and return the mech to the off position.

pulled the cable with pliers. seems to be free enough just gonna have to go and battle with more wd i think

    doh!

    da tell me that! lol

well just had another looky there. now the handbrake bit on the caliper works fine with out the cable attached. doesent stick. so i am assumeing that the cable may be dry?? just a tad to tight for it to be pulled back thru fully.

or what ever it connects to is. how easy is it to remove it from the handbrake its self?

Hi, I had this with one of my rear calipers causing the disc to overheat - I put a second spring on and that did the trick - although I eventually I replaced the caliper. It seems to be a sealed unit with no access to the handbrake mechanism

Did you try removing the spring on the caliper? One of mine broke a couple of weeks ago and I managed to rob a couple off a vec at the scrappys this week, were a pig to remove and put back on. Maybe as you say the tension in the spring has gone. If you can remove the spring easily id say it is gone. Off the cailper the spring is at least 15-20mm shorter than it is when stretched in place.
