    Default Understanding the EGR Valve

I’m after a bit of advice with regards the egr valve; I have a 120 cdti which is just recently started jerking under 2000 revs mainly from cold. After reading around regarding the egr valve and not being very mechanically minded I have a few questions

1 what dose the valve do

2 I see a lot of people have blanked it off, what are the long term benefits in this

3 are there any long term side affects, (surly it was fitted for some reason)

4 What do you use to blank it off and is it simple to do

Sorry for the question but it will help me understand and clarify a few thing’s and hopefully help me decided weather to buy a new one or just remove it.

I have a very limited understanding of the EGR but as I see it:

    1. It recirculates exhaust gasses into the engine. The idea behind it is to give a more complete burn of fuel, lower combustion temps and reduce the production of harmful exhaust gasses

    2. Blanking prevents exhaust fumes being recirculated and so stops soot building up on the inlet manifold and turning into oily gunk. Improved running at the bottom end f the rev range.

    3. Nope

    4. A blanking plate from eBay costs about £4 and is very easy to do. Undo 2 bolts, slip the blanking plate in redo the bolts. I'll do a how2 if you like?

Once I've blanked it off will that be the end of it or do I need to have it remaped?

You'll get the spanner light and eml light when you turn the ignition on. The eml will stay on until you have the EGR mapped out.

It's on the back right corner between the engine and the bulkhead on the 1.9cdti 150 (dont know about the 120 but I'd assume the same.)
