In theory it will let more air into the engine - I'm sceptical. All it will do is let the engine draw in warm less dense (and dirtier) air form the engine bay.
It actually doens't let more air into the engine, but may release a pressure drop. Some results have shown it causes the engine to run hotter.
dont really understand it mate why would anyone wanna drill a big whole in there airbox lol , isnt the airbox mod ok itself
think i'll leave that 1 lol , theres so much i want to do my my vec i dont know where to start really i will get a k&n panel filter and maybe lower it aswell but will have to refurb my alloys first , anyone on here refurbed there alloys themselves
I have drilled mine, engine temp rised by about 7 degrees. it did run smoother.
I thought people did it for more induction noise as well? Gives nearly the same effect as having an induction kit.
I drilled mine, because the stage 3 map has turned the boost up on the turbo so much the airbox was strangling it at top end revs, drilling holes allow the turbo to suck that extra air through as required that it can't get through the single opening (not just my imagination this has been rolling road proved).
Should be noted though that this ONLY affects the very top end of the rev range and ONLY affects tuned/mapped cars. Why do you think Vauxhall put an extra hole in the VXR airbox?
Edit: as per Howards post below, zero effect on the temps but a noticeable difference in kick at the top end of the rev range.

I was prob one of the first of the later lot to drill my air box as per the VXR 280 air box mod and i've seen no raise in temp at all and the 2.8 engine bay is as hot as hell :-)
