    Default Alternator problem... Please help!

    Ok...

Got the car about 6weeks ago and seemed to get harder to start every day. Then break down on the m1. Flat battery and am told that the alternator and battery needs changing.*

Did this four days ago , Bosch battery and recon denso alternator.*

Drove to London and the battery light comes on after 30 mins. Re start the car and then it goes of....

Tested the voltage on the battery this morning it's 11.8v while the engine is off and 12.3v with the engine running.

I have little mechanical or electrical knowledge but after reading other peoples post I would expect the reading once running to be about 13.5v plus?

Any ideas on what could be wrong?*

Should be about 14.2v with engine running and all electrical items (blower, lights, etc) off. May drop to about 13.5v with everything on.

Are the battery connections clean and tight? Check the earth connections too, and connection to alternator.

Otherwise it may be another alternator

Sounds like a dodgy alternator - did you have any problems with your power steering?

    Defo the alternator mate

I had mine go on me just before xmas

Mine went totally all lights on dash and no power steering.

    This killed my battery

my new alternator kicks out arround 14.6v when engine running with nothing switched on, and drops to arround 13.4 with aircon, radio, etc on.

So take it / send it back mate

Exactly the same happened to my missus' car, except the battery survived Not quite sure how, as there wasn't even enough power to close the window or operate the central locking. New alternator fitted and started with jump leads, battery is still ok now (2 months / 2k miles on).

Voltage is far to low. try the multi meter across the 2 battery posts with the engine running, make a note of the voltage.

The with engine still running probe positive post and negative to the engine block ( engine lift out brackets are a good choice, If there is a differance in voltage your engine to body earth has failed / failing.

my advise would be not to use a denso as these are original makes on vectras and dont last very long

Ok, still struggling with this one. Had two brand new alternators fitted, a new batt, a new belt and pre tensioner and the alternator is still only supplying the batt with 12.3v? It kicks in when it should and goes off when it should. The garage is baffled and I am already £559 out of pocket. Please anyone?

There's loads of different amp rated alternators for the Vectra. Check what Amps yours is, if it is too low then it probably would give a phooey reading.

Mine went and i replaced with the first one I could get which must be a lower rated alternator, most I get is about 13.7-13.9V with the engine running and everything off.

If you still have the original alternator, have a look to see what rating is on it and then see if you can find the rating of the new one.

If the garage has supplied the alternators, make sure they got the right one! I would not be paying for them or the extra fitting if they supplied the wrong one!

Thanks rob, I checked this and it's the correct one. I had the Multi meter on it at the garage and it was no where near 13v . Just sat at 12.3v with all the lights off etc. However.. Only once did it jump to 12.9v but this was when nobody was even in the car changing anything. The mechanic says the alternator could be running the wrong way but I thing he is talking crap now.
