Default HiDs not an MOT failure

The wife's car went in this morning for an MOT, I was a little worried the HiDs may fail, but the guy said they are a weird colour but they are in line and are road legal (Not sure if that is true as they do not have washer's) and it passed with no advisories. Happy days.

They will be a failure from January 2012 (I think its Jan), but for now they aren't a failure.

As keeps getting reported, but when I spoke to a tester the other day who has just done his refesher course, among things discussed that are coming in the future, HIDs weren't mentioned at all.

Doing a quick dig into this one I've been coming up with things that seem to be trying to get EU countries all playing off the same checksheet with regard to vehicle inspections.

The latest I could find (without digging overly deep) was an EU directive to be brought into force by member states no later than 31 December 2011 and as far as headlamps/HIDs were concerned it was aimed at the new fail point being compatability between lamp and headlamp unit - ie HIDs fitted in non-projector type headlamps. There is a point of washer systems (where mandatory) not operating and in the case of levelling devices (where mandatory) not working, including manual operation.

As far as suspecsion goes you can fail for 'inappropriate repair or modification'.

Then comes Engine Performance - Visual Inspection - failures for 'Control unit illegal modified' and 'illegal engine modification'.

One more pertinent point is dashboard fault indicator light or MIL.... if illuminated for a safety system (SRS/airbags) that's a fail too.

Have a read for yourselves in case I have miss something of interest :

the latest issue of "MOT Matters of Testing" (UK VOSA publication) is what we should be reading.
There's a statement there to the effect: - "Headlamp cleaning and self‑levelling are required if high‑intensity discharge (HID) lamps are fitted".
As already said, this is not due to come in until 2012.
Exactly how this is going to be dealt with remains to be seen - but taking the statement on face value, it seems quite clear what the intention is.
