    Default Fuel left/trip computer

    Hi
Range came on 30 miles yet id only used 50 L.(i had previously filled it)..went to fill up......brimmed at exactly 50 L. So it seems the 'fuel used' is accurate but the range is way out...even the petrol light under the gauge came on more or less at the same time. Does my computer need re calibrating? Is it even possible? Wouldnt have minded being a couple of litres out..but 11!!! thats over 2 gallons.;..easily 70 plus miles.Any thoughts please.

I think you'll find most of us have the same thing, probably a concerted effort by Vauxhall to try and stop us running out of fuel!

Nope! it's the usual, comps guessing how much is left, my opinion is that as long as you dont let the needle drop off the scale you will make it to a gas station.

This morning I got in the car and the range said 100 miles. I drove 3 miles to the motorway along country road and the range droped to 90 miles. I did 44 miles of 70 is and the range rose to 116 miles. On arriving in Stockport 47 miles later the range said 96 miles.

I suspect the computer takes your average consumption over the last X miles. So if you continue to drive in that manor, thats ya range. If you change you style the range changes. It's been pretty accurate for me so far The needle was just dropping off the gauge with 3 miles to go.....lowest I've been!

I also suspect that the tank in "conical" shaped but the fuel sensor is linear. When I first drove a Vec as a hire car. I did miles and miles on the first half of a tank but after 1/4 of a tank remaining, the needle would plummet!

i think your post above wraps it up nicely Brocks.

the computer does calculate the range based on the last 10-20km of driving. so how you drive determines the range that is shown. your example above illustrates that perfectly.

and i've never had a car with a fuel needle that goes down uniformly.

What I find strange is if I fill the tank I can get 300miles from needle pointing at Full to needle at half way. Then from half way to empty I can only get 250 miles max.
Still 550 miles on £40 is pretty good. My 5 series was only getting 450 on £60.
The cars almost paid for itself.

Its due to the shape of the tank not being even and the sensor (whether it be a variable capacitance type or ball and potentiometer type) not being set up to compensate for the tank shape.
