Default Fuel Consumption Gone Through The Floor

Has anyone had a similar problem & what have you done to solve it?

Driving home from Edinburgh today and has happen on a few occassion before, I noticed that my consumption had gone through the floor despite driving like a granny. Typical/Average consumption when stationary is 0.2/0.3 gal/hr, and free wheeling at 55 it's 350ish mpg. I have noticed that when it goes haywire standing still it can be 1 gal/hr and freewheeling 55-60mpg. If I stop switch off, remove the key & restart it will reset itself to a normal consumption.

There is no pattern for it occuring. This afternoon I was coming down the M9 doing 65 in 6th and getting 18mpg. Pulled over to reset and ok. an hour or so later did it again. Pulled over reset and got home with no problems. The last leg was about 48 miles.

Dealer looked at it last week and said nothing wrong. Well if thats the case why the increase in consumption from 0.2 to 1 stationary. Revs do not increase. I switched everything off made no difference. Really puzzled!!!. The car is a V6 facelift CDTI with NO engine mods yet 11k and 6 months old.

Is your problem evident at the pumps, or is it just on the computer ? My consumption went through the flor when I ran it in. This was down to the good old lead right foot though *lol*

No, I have done the pump calculation at fill up and it is all correct. Burning fuel like a tank until it's reset.

I don't think you can really take those figures as anything accurate. You're talking about being sat stationery and when you lift off the throttle and are coasting. The fuel computer is never going to be able to give an anywhere near accurate figure in those circumstances.

If your overall range/fuel pump figures are okay then I wouldn't worry about it.

No sorry should have spelt that last post out better. The problem is that the fuel figures are not ok. By measuring fuel at the pump, it confirms that the computer is right.

When it starts to eat fuel I have noticed how quickly the needle goes down on the fuel gauge. Would you expect to drive at 65 in 5th or 6th, cover 40 miles and use an 1/8 of a tank, which is one mark. When I 1st got the car I did drive 500 miles on 1 tank, driving at that speed. The only thing that is different is the garage did an oil and filter change at 10k and it seems to be since then but I don't understand why I am only getting 300 miles or so from a tank when it does this

i'm having something similar but nothing to that extent. i'm noticing these days that i'm only getting around 450ish to a tank, whereas before i could another 30 miles out of it fairly easily.

like yours mine has been recently serviced but that also coincided closely with the removal of my performance box. i found that with the box on the car would burn alot less fuel when doing a long run and sitting at 85 on the motorway.

my computer still seems about right though, and nothing like .3gal/hr when stationary, still 0.1.

Try completely switching off your air con unit, could be a fault with that?

I have ECC. All I can do is manually switch to 0. This made no difference.
