The old school method of having a wad of old rag held against the tailpipe will help you find whether the exhaust is blowing. This is easier with the help of another person - one person holds the rag and the other listens for the sounds.

Does it smell with the engine warmed up (i.e. catalyst hot and working), or with it all clap cold m8? Was the cat removed when you had your exhaust done? If you've no cat, the exhaust will smell.
