Default Power Steering Light - Few different opinions

Power steering light come on, but only when starting off from a stand still and usually when going up a hill, or accelerating, or turning right

Local garage has checked the fluid and all fine. The power steering light they think is the steering column and/or rack (as the rack is leaking). The power steering fluid is fine though. They have said it could be a sensor on the steering column, if so the steering column would need to be replaced "at a cost of a few hundred pounds."

Looking around on here could be a module, or hub sensors....

The garage said no codes came up for the steering. They said only solution is to replace the steering column at £300+

As it only comes on for approx 10 seconds when starting off or up a hill, sounds like a faulty level sensor?

Hmm...garage don't really want to touch it.

They said..."'its a ****** to get to, have checked it and fluids are fine again, sounds like a sensor and or new steering column mate, not worth the repair.."

    It's a 52 reg.

****** vauxhalls and their sensors. Just going to run it with all the lights on. Sod it.

Try a different garage - the steering rack in the Vectra C isn't that different from a lot of cars made in the last 10 years.

Sounds to me like you've got a garage who are no doubt very competent but haven't adapted to the changes in vehicle design in the last 15 years or so. Electronics are an essential part of modern cars, otherwise they'd never attain the safety and emissions levels we expect from them.

Which is why I've got a 1991 Pajero (mechanical injection turbo diesel) and a 1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo (carburettor pushrod turbo petrol) - both of which have next to no electronics (just warning lights, starter motor and radio basically). And I've got a decent BEng degree in electronics!
