    Default brake pedal travel

Ive read online that this could just be a general issue with these cars but i thought id ask everyone else.

I have a vectra 07 plate (facelift one), 1.9CDTi. The brakes stop me, and the abs does kick in if i slam the anchors on. But the brake seems a little "weird".

It travels quite far down (im a fairly new driver, second car, first was a '99 fiesta so i dont have much experience in the "norm"). However if i pump the pedal, it gets solid, 3 or 4 pumps and it gets rock hard near the top of its travel, keep applying a fair bit of pressure and the pedal will slowly creep back down, leave it for 30 seconds and it goes back to travelling down quite far.

Im not concerned about the safety aspect, it stops me and the abs works, but its the mot that may cause me issue (im not sure). So i was wondering what other peoples vectra were like in this aspect ?

you will find the brake pedal creep away if you keep pressure on a diesel is diff to petrol vac is supplied from a vac pump on diesel as its from manifold vac on a petrol its normal for this to happen.

If you are stationary when this happens it is due to the ABS unit reducing the pressure, as it thinks all four wheels are locked, try it with the engine switched off it should be solid mine creeps when stationary but is solid when I am moving or the ignition is off.

makes sense. what about the issue of travel though ? im gonna check it tomorrow, i believe as long as its 20mm from touching the floor then its passable. But it seems weird how it travels really far, a few pumps and its rock hard at the top of its travel, then 30 seconds later its got full travel again.

Just something that supposed to happen ?

Im just curious rather than cautious with it. Waste of 24 hours if i dont learn anything new

Edit: ah paul that makes sense. Should have guessed that myself, obvious thing really. ABS doing what ABS supposed to, so something in my car does work

Brake fluid is best changed every two years how old is yours?

    Moisture mixes with the fluid.

Check rear pads how are they & disc thickness?

pads and discs were changed last week (5 hours of banging the front discs with a hammer, not my idea of a weekend really).

Cars an 07 plate and i doubt its ever been changed. Im running dry on resources at the moment, but next payday , if my vx cards here im gonna go up vx and grab all the goodies for a service (oil, filters e.c.t.). Gonna probably do the brake fluid then after reading online yesterday about it and that being the first answer everyone gave.

Cheers anyway. I guess its just one of them things. Pretty sure i didnt flip the seals as i went pretty slow with the pistons (first disc change so i caressed the pistons back in :] ). However i wish i knew last week what i know now.. and i would have opened the nipples instead. We live and learn
