Default Quick question reference oil change

i went to VX to see how much a service would be as could be expected i walked away and im doing it my self. the question is my service history says its had 10/40 oil form the start but when i asked at the service desk he said they always use 5/30 oil ive bought 10/40 but now having second thoughts before i go ahead. what do you recon? its a vectra c elegance 2.2 petrol just hit 60000 miles.

    thanks

The difference between 5W30 and 10W40 is pretty marginal. 5W and 10W are both good for the minimum temperatures we get in the UK (both below -20°C) and 30 and 40 are both able to cope with the highest temperatures the non-turbo Vectra engines get to with ease.

The viscosity isn't that critical as long as it's able to cope with the range of temperatures in the engine. So I wouldn't for example use something like 20W50 in a Vectra, as it's too thick when cold for the fairly close tolerances in these engines. But I would use it in a 1970's Escort for example, which has much bigger oilways that don't need as thin an oil. Similarly in my old Nissan Pulsar GTI-R, I used to use Castrol R 10W60 - because the engine in that car could get the oil to 120°C quite easily on a track day, hence the need for an oil that can stay thick enough at high temperatures.

What matters more is the chemical composition and API rating - pretty much anything from VX will be suitable.

If your service intervals were 20k then they have to use 5w30. If there 10k then 10w40 is fine. Always use gm filters as well mate.

well it was a bit of a panic service if you know what i mean its not due for anoter few k but ive got a lot of important long mile journeys coming up so i wanted to get the car serviced. VX wanted £299 for oil, air, pollen and petrol filters. oil change sump plug+seals spark plugs and change of brake fluid my heart nearly stopped so i went to halfords with trade card and got oil, pollen and petrol filters (air was good) oil, spark plugs and sump plug for £53 and did all that this afternoon. TBH i was botherd about the stamps because its full so far but i thought im not paying 300 for something i can do my self. do you recon ill be alright till next time when ive got the money and time to get GM

GM oils HERE mate at very good prices. I do stress though to only use GM oil filters as the none GM filter have been known to break down and trigger the 2.2's achilles heal by blocking to oil jet to the cam chain.

I have self serviced my 53 plate 2.2 from when the factory warrinty ran out. The way I see it, is that when it comes time to sell its not going to worth anything, having dealer stamps isn't going to increase its value by much and the over all money I will have saved with easily pay for itself.

No mate, change the filter for piece of mind if you wish but the oil will be fine.
