Default Anyone else heard this rumour...

Was paying (well over the odds as usual) for my petrol at Tesco today (Momentum to give my car a little treat!) and overheard the 2 staff in the kiosk talking.

Sounded like there's going to be a restriction on who can buy petrol in a can. Don't know whether it's just Tesco, or every supplier. The 2 staff were talking about 18-30 year olds having problems if they run out of fuel and nip down to the petrol station with the jerry can, as has been the case for donkeys years.

    Anyone else heard about this?

Might stop the rioters from making petrol bombs, but screws 99% of us decent people.

The stores reserve the right to refuse any sale; not just petrol.

You'll be fine. Going to collect 5 litres of unleaded on a Sunday morning might make you look at lot less like a troublemaker, but possibly don't wear a hoodie!

Perhaps it might be worthwhile to ask beforehand?

Several forecourts in Norfolk refusing or using discretion already - I must have missed the riots here...

As above, it is up to the retailer to decide
Equally, there are restrictions depending on the Petroleum Licence

The current restriction is to persons aged 18 and over for petrol cans
Ironically, a person aged 16 and over can use a petrol pump to fill a vehicle

I suspect what some local authorities are proposing is that for the filling of petrol cans where the person does not have a vehicle, they MUST supply suitable identification prior to use of the petrol pump

All this will achieve is to inconvience the genuine happless person,s who forgot to fill up.
i doubt that any of these rioters obtained fuel this way, more than likely they just cut the fuel lines of some poor guys car and obtained there fuel that way .

There are even simpler methods than that!

A few weeks ago had someone on the forecourt and he was asked to come into the shop
Asked what he was filling up
    A plastic bag
Over the years I have seen all kinds of things, from plastic cups, flasks, "ginger bottles", to a ship

I've also had the police request CCTV footage for the theft of BBQ lighting fluid, two guesses what happened to that!

exactly - older guy had ran out of petrol in his car the other day (car was only 100yds from the station) and he walked into our local tesco filling station as i was filling my car up. he was refused the ability to fill up his std approved green petrol can, as our local tesco has a policy outright banning all can's being filled.

We have a real issue in the area with "yoof's" on mini-moto's and unregistered motorbikes tearing up and down the local paths in the estate. The ban is in force to try and combat this, but innocent people get caught up in it.

he was more than a little annoyed.

Bp in Harlow had a writen sign on a A4 sheet of paper saying that no one would be able to fill up any containers what so ever.
Asked the guy in the shop and was told that Bp is now enforcing the idea due to the Riots. So I asked the guy on the possibility of one getting stuck for petrol and having to fill up a can and was told - Well, you will be screwed then wont ya.
Lets just say that the missus did not let him of that easily hehe.. .
