Default Serious missfire 3.0 V6 CDTI

My dads Signum has developed a really bad misfire, i went out in it tonight and its really bad at partial throttle just maintaining a constant speed, it surges an pulses like mad!

It throws the engine management light but not fault codes, and once you restart it it goes off.

When i got out of it the was a strong burning smell so i looked underneath to smell if it was coming from the DPF and noticed the sensor on the DPF (or cat, not sure, its about in line with the handbrake) looked as if the cable was hanging down so i looked closer with my torch i hit the sensor and the cat ticked over differently now this could have been coincidence but the tone of the engine changed.

Need to have a better look tomorrow but does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Dpf could be blocked, scv's, blocked fuel filter, possible injectors?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

It will have thrown a code if the management light / spanner light came on. Not all readers can read the spanner codes, some can only read 'engine' codes.

However, have a look and try and see what may be obviously wrong and correct this. If no joy, have the codes read and take it from there.

That large can about in line with the handbrake is the DPF, by the way Good luck and I hope the weather is better where you are when you're having a look at it this morning!!!

SCV - suction control valves. Don't start worrying about them just yet (you will only scare yourself). Fix what is obviously broken, if there appears to be anything amiss

There are several readers that can investigate the full range of trouble codes - some of them are cheap and available on the net and some are illegal copies of genuine software and discussion is a 'thread locker'

Some code readers and software can only read the basic 'check engine' code: I made the mistake of buying an ELM327 interface with (genuine) PCMSCAN software. However, there is software that can use this interface and investigate all codes - one member told me he had an ELM and can do this.

IIRC, you need something that is OBD-II compatable, but I may be mistaken. Caveat Emptor regarding choosing to buy copied software, if you do!

See how you get on, then get back if it's no better... another option, rather than a Tech2 is to get it to a local garage with a decent reader (they will likely charge for this, but it could be less than a Tech2 at VX). If they tell you that there are no codes, they do not have the right reader to investigate spanner codes...

Few more symptoms: when you boot it at motorway speed an it's building up speed the engine management light comes on. It's an auto, but in sport it doesn't causethe light to come on, it's still misfiring like mad. We've come away for the weekend and now got no tools, do have breakdown assist tho lol.

It's smoking a lot aswell, the tail pipes are rotten and they are usually really clean and it never used to thow any smoke out at all.

    What does it idle like?

A misfire is where the engine suffers what in effect is a hickup
However, a blocked SCV feels more like the brakes are being applied and the power surges
    Which is it more like?

There's a list on here of who has what services (e.g. member XXX had Tech2 location YYY), maybe there is someone who nearby to have a 'sniff' at it.

Will try to find the link...
