    Default vectra steering clunk

    Hi guys,
This is my first post so be gentle...:-)

    The model is a 1.9cdti 150 on a 57plate.
Im getting a slight clunk through the steering wheel when turning. the car itself has 31000 miles on and i've only had it under a week. I was going to give it back to the dealer to investigate but i want to be ready when they tell me the inevitable story "that they can't find a problem"
I had similar issues on my 02 plate sri 150 a few years ago.Vauxhall subsequently changed the rack twice which didn't resolve the problem. The problem is very similar... The clunk is more noticeable when you are turning at low speeds like in a car park.

    The model is a 1.9cdti 150 on a 57plate.

any help will be much appreciated

    thanks

    stu

Is it just one "clunk" as if it were missing something or jumping, or is it continous (not that im mechanically minded, but im guessing that information would help someone else figure it out)

Does it do it when the car is staionary? At first guess i'd say the upper strut mounts need replacement

    Hi,

The clunk seems to come from behind the steering wheel on the column. the 'play' is is more noticeable when engine is off and the steering wheel is 'wiggled' back and forward...i meant to say that the garage put it through its MOT...

    ?

I think it's the front top shocker mount bearings. Mine did this, either at low speeds or at rest. Does sound like a clunk but it's the bearings.
Can also cause the feeling of out of balance wheels sometimes ..

Its funny you mention that chewy.

the steering vibrates from 65 upwards. (im not obviously going to say what though..)
    i suspected wheel balance....
im not holding out much hope of repair from the garage...E*ans H*alsh*w...

Don't,. they will charge you £165 + VAT - and say it's 3 hours work. (EH in Hull / Bev?)

I got mine done locally for £90

these parts are covered up to 37,000 miles (mine went at 47,000) .. but you will be out of the MF warranty too so despite being in on the mileage,.. your too old!!

Just check where the steering column (bottom) connects to the rack.
My steering wheel had play in it, more of a looseness rather than a clunk though.
Anyway nipped up the pinch bolt on the bottom of the column, job done no more play at the wheel.

Apparently they do work loose on the Veccy.
