Probably psychological, but maybe the old water pump and parts were worn enough to affect the performance? May genuinely be running a bit better.

am wondering here, sure someone will put me right if im wrong.

if a cambelt has been on a car for longer than it should overtime would it not strech slightly? so when a new belt is put on it is everso slightly shorter and allowing more accurate timing with the valves and hence slight power increse?

reminds me: A "top gear" show a couple of years ago -- they spent about 10 grand on tuning parts for a renault, as an experiment (fitted huge brakes, sport suspension and all sorts) and in the end they found that the modified car was slower around the track than the standard one.

It was seroiusly faster, just not as fast as the scoobie [or was it an EVO] which was the purpose of the excercise.

Back to the belt change, a lot of **** taking but the timing was highly likely to have been out by a few degrees. We all know from our tuning days a cam can be tweaked a couple of degrees with a vernier to ensure very accurate factory set or enhance the power or torque curves. and with this engine that could be enough to feel!!

    just checked:
The Renault project is 'OUR CAR' as you can see below, it went from the bottom of the board to thrash CTR'S, Elise, Clio V6. some 7 secs better than std.

Was quicker when they put it on racing tyres & different suspension & took all the seats out, as you'd expect - but the £3grand brakes made it slower
