Default Help!!! Harsh 3rd gear upshift WORRIED!!!

Today has been oficially the worst day of this year.

first i damaged my new Barcelona FC MESSI jersey in the garage.
second my team looses against his biggest rival (Real madrid)

and just as i thought it couldn't get any worse my car started with problems.

two weeks ago i made the fluid change.

there hasn't been any new problems (besides the fact that my car stalls very little when getting speed after stopping in heavy traffic (stop - go - stop - go....)

and now my car is "jumping" when changing from 2nd to 3rd both auto and manual.

i was reading in some web search results and i found one toyota PDF that has an image that made me a little worried.

it explains the levels of the dip stick and it appears to be the same dipstick design as the vectra.

it has 4 marks. the first is situated a few mm from the end.. then a second mark about 1.5cm (between those to marks it says COOL).. the third mark is about 1cm from the 2nd and the forth is about 1.5 cm from the third (between the 3rd and the 4th it says HOT)

when the mechanic filled my tranny fluid i said to him that it supposed to be between the second and the third marks (the tranny was already hot)
but now that i look at this image i found out that it is suppose to be between the third and the forth marks.. and this may cause harsh shifting..

but since the harsh shifting only ocurrs when changing from 2nd to 3rd i believe that it could be something else and i am very very worried.

I beg for someone how has had this problem before..

    My car is a 2003 Veccy 3.2L V6 automatic with 62000km...

    Jose,

first place to start is take it back and get him to re-check and correct the trans fluid level. When the trans is at working temp he needs to fill it to the upper line.., with the engine running and the selector in park.

either that or if you have to leave the car, get him to do it to the cold setting, but the trans must be at air tempreture and not warm.

Then see if it shifts any better..

damm i was just looking at the PDF you once send me and there is the image that indicates the correct level!!!

but i believe that my car dipstick is not identical to that cause mine had a legend that says: "Type IV Fluid" above the "HOT" legend...

but i will fax that image to my mechanic to use it as a reference...

I read in some replies about some Vacuum actuator problems.. but couldn't find any more info. Is that the same as VALVE Control Unit? or what other name could it be used?

Also.. it makes me a little confused that when they flushed my transmission they took only 3.1 lts and when they filled they put 3 liters, then i took the car for a ride to warm the transmission up and check the level and it took 1 more liter to place it in the middle of the cold and hot marks..

So if it is still below the level, then before the fluid change it was much more low. (i was stupid enough to didn't check the dipstick before the fluid change.. i only looked at the color of the fluid but didn't recheck it..

If it was cold, then they would have only had to add what they removed..

It is important that the fluid change and checks on the level are done with the trans at the SAME temperature.. so if the filled it and drove it round it should end up at the same level..

if the trans was cold and you drove the car, when you re-checked it it should only have been between the 1st and 2nd mark, not the 2nd and 3rd that it is filled to now... it looks like you have too much trans fluid in the box.. this may be the cause of the problems you are having.. too much oil is worse than too little as it causes pressure to be built up in the box..so beware of leaking seals etc..

As a rule, i use TOTALLY clean measuring jugs to see how much fluid i drain, then i replace that EXACT amount back into the box.. if the box is showing no signs of leakage then you can be sure the amount you have added will be correct.

but why can it be causing probs only upshifting from 2nd to 3rd.???

does that clutch requires more fluid (or less fluid in case it is overfilled???)

also how long do i have to drive the car to get the tranny in the right temp???

    about 3 minutes?? much more????

damm i am starting to get much worried!!!

why is it that shift?? who knows.. may be a little dislodged dirt in the actuator valve??

How long to get it to operating temperature?? about 5 miles.. the fluid has to be 70 degrees C if memory serves..

My honest advice is do a COLD check.. get the fluid level back down to the 2nd line as a Maximum and then see how it drives..but drain and check the level BEFORE driving the car.. remember, only do a level check with the engine idling and the car in park..as a guess i'd say you want most of that last liter back out.

Well some news but still having problems..

i took the car to the garage on monday and my mechanic checked the fluid level an put it at the exact level as the manual says but it didn't do anything.

he scanned the car and found nothing (no error codes) so he recommended me to take the car to the dealership so i did.

fortunately a friend of my brother is a manager in one Chevrolet dealership and he spoke to the mechanics chief about me so when i arrived everything was very nice.

they told me that there was a program (recall) for every vectra sold in mexico (we only have 2.2 Gas, 3.2 Gas and the new turbo.. all automatics

so they checked some cooler hoses but nothing to worry about that. also they scanned the car with the TECH 2 and found some error codes (they didn't told me if they were recurrent or permanent) and they reset everything and we took it for a ride but nothing happened.

my car still kicks when shifting 2-3

i found out that if i put on manual and release the gas pedal a second before upshifting the kick doesn't appear but in traffic it is kind of complicated (maybe i will get used to it)

the mechanic at the dealership asked me to bring the car again on saturday cause they have a specialist from Chevrolet that day.

he told me that maybe there was a problem with te Valve Unit but since the problem only had a couple of days maybe thats why it didnt appear as an error.

i have a couple of doubts with this.. The valve unit is the same as the VACUUM control unit???

He also told me that since they have that recall maybe there is a way to claim warranty (arguing coolant and tranny fluid mix i suppose or something like that) but it is obviously not for shure.

I was thinking if the problematic part was the Vacuum control unit is there any way to repair it? cause i asked for the price and it cost about 35000 mxn (about 1700 pounds!!!!) - also since i am a friend of the dealer they can sell it to me at their price (about 20000 mxn - 1000 pounds) still it is too much money.

i believe if thats the case that i would sell the car and found another with less miles and one year newer for less than that difference.

so if anyone has have a similar problem i would really use your advice...

    thx.
