Default Anyone explain this 1.9 CDTi 150

I am on my second car with this engine, neither sounded alike in any case, this one is a lot more gruff sounding than the first, a lot less smoky, and a little less economical.
BUT,,, I recently performed the EGR restricted gasket mod, the small one with three hole not the larger rectangular one.

I have noticed my engine sound quite a bit different. It has a more deep and hollow note to it, much nicer than it was before. I cannot put it down to anything else as all I did was remove a very minor amount of carbon from the egr check the operation, then add the lower gasket.

Have you check the air filter, and of the airbox mod has been done?

The only thing I can think of is the gasket is causing slightly higher pressure drop across the two manifold - ie exhaust is finding it easier to pass through the turbo and out the exhaust. Also there is easier flow of gases through the valve. It's a bit feeble as theory tbh.

That gasket isn't the one I gave you in March is it?

It is mate, and it is quite a noticeably nicer engine tone.

Ian, the Airbox mod was done on October 18th last year (the day I collected the car) the Air filter was new in Feb also, so this has really been the only mod.

Ok, just mulling it over, wondering what could be contributing to it. Some engines do sound and run sweeter than others, but what you are describing is more than just a sweet engine. Gazza4's theory sounds as good as any.

Maybe the EGR feeder pipe was loose before, and now you have removed the bolts and refitted them (to fit the gasket) its now as tight as it should be??

Just changing the boost level or fueling can change the tone on the exhaust, so it's nothing to worry about if the noise is the only thing that has changed.

    Thanks guys,

Not worried about it much prefer it to be honest, the change is subtle but different. I was wondering if it was the restriction in flow from the new gasket and am concluding it is.
