Default Car Auctions - Worth going ?

    Hi,

If i can get the time off work I hope to go to a car auction with a mate who is looking for a new (well, used!) car. I used to goto to an Auction in Stoke many years ago (ooh the smell of petrol/fumes!)

has anyone been to an auction recently, if so did the cars that sold go for a "low" (trade?) price, also by the time you add all the fee's on (buyers fee etc) is it worth it ? Thanks!

I bought mine from Scottish Motor Auctions in Livingston, its a different kettle of fish these days, all the big auction houses are selling cars that are checked for history prior to sale. No issues from me, just check for the hidden charges like indemnities, cost to send off V5 etc prior to raising your hand.

Before I bought the mrs her car I went to a few car auctions and tbh they were all either a load of rubbish or the half decent ones went for the same sort of money you'd get them for privately. I was quite dissapointed tbh.

When i last was at an auction about three months ago ,

the vectras were being sold for virtually the same price as they are on ebay and autotrader ,

and that was on the auction floor ,

so by the time you add fees .......... Not Really The Bargain One Would Hope For .

But if you view auctions as an extra avenue to go down after ebay and autotrader and the free papers , then you might find the car you want .

Good luck finding a real bargain .

1 tip don't go to buy that day go to 2 or 3 auctions and see wot goes for wot price a friend of mine buys cars around the £500-750 mark gives em a polish and flogs em for a few hundred more.

2 tip dont buy small hatchbacks & small engines there over priced and you could easily end up in a bidding war on these type of cars.

tip 3 go with someone who has good mechanical Knowledge.

Plus, if you go and have a look around early, you can ask about history and paperwork, have a look at the cars, see if oil filthy etc.
