Default CR1 Tuning Box Problems HELP!!

    Hi All,

I bought a 2nd hand CR1 tuning box from one of our members on thursday, it was fitted for me by the previous user & I couldn't beleive the difference it made to the car , all was great friday (90 miles) & saturday (300 mile trip to London & back)

However this morning I drove off in the car (slowly at first to warm up the engine) & noticed that i no longer had the power boost any more , more worrying was a slight acrid burning smell (like a burning clutch), I pulled over & checked the engine all looked ok, tried again still no power (car drives like stanard spec (engine is 1.9CDTI 150, 3700 miles), tried tweeking the adjuster -no good, tried taking the box off & refitting - no good, decided to remove the box for safety. The car drives fine as standard, no burning smell - normal 150 performance

I've checked the connections on the box & they look fine, the box was definately connected the right way round.

    Any ideas???

    Cheers Cameraman

Neil, obviously have no clue what is causing this problem, but are there any signs of damage to the actual unit or wiring ?

Or does everything look as it should..

EDIT: Also, what adjustments did you make (if any) when you had a chance to 'tune' it ?

Oh, and I dont mind people knowing that it was my CR1 tuning box that you bought from me... Obviously it has been working absolutely fine right up until now, bl00dy typical, but as mentioned on the phone we should get it all working for you, or I will gladly refund your money... just dont want a dead box back preferably.

If we cant help on here, maybe I can send it back to Diagnostix for a warrantee replacement ??

Certainly dont want you to be unhappy with it as it was all sold in good faith (and working fine )

Steve (bit embarraced actually !! )

I would reset the box by turning it back to standard. Can't remember on the CR1 but I think it is anticlockwise until it just clicks. The turn opposite way until 18 turns though that depends on what CR1 it is as there is 3 variants to my knowledge.

Make sure the loom isn't running over a red hot part of the engine and the box is away from the engine pref around the battery compartment etc.

There isn't much to go wrong with the CR1, it is basically a resistor in a box with loads of glue (very basic description of one).

Steve - Worth reseting if first and making sure it is ok. They are very basic units so not much to go wrong if you see what I mean?

Yep, we tried to keep the wiring away from the engine and the box was routed through to the battery compartment when he left my house !!

EDIT: The wiring and routing was the same as it was on my car for 4 months !!

Tried a "reset" the box seemed to click after 15 turns clockwise, I turned the adjuster back 15 turns & tried it in the car still no power improvement, gave it another 4 turns anti clockwise still no change

Dare I say, give it another turn... then try again... then repeat again if no change....

EDIT: when you 'tuned' the box, did you turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise?

I'm only thinking if you managed to tune-down rather than tune-up by accident ??
