Default Spanner Light and Engine Management Light

    What's the difference?

what does the car with the spanner mean as opposed to the orange engine light?

    Thanks

Can mean many things, automatic gearbox, emissions problems and if it flashes, it is an immobilizer fault. The car can be driven, if running ok but the engine management system should be checked ASAP. The symbol of the car with the spanner in the middle IS your engine management light.
Is there another light that you see on your dashboard? In order to check exactly what the problem is, you will need to get a diagnostic check done on the car.

Car/spanner is the engine electronics / auto gearbox (if fitted) / & immobiliser fault (if flashing) light.

Engine light is the emissions fault light.

The orange engine outline (bottom right of dash) is the Emissions light - if it's on there is a problem with the emissions system of the car (EGR etc...). I also think it flashes during a DPF regen (although I do not have a DPF, so not 100% sure).

The 'Car + Spanner' light (in the orange matrix under the rev counter) also known as MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), EML (Engine Management Light) indicates a raft of fault codes that could be (or have been) present with various parts of the car/engine - need to get the code read to find out what it/they are. There is a pedal test that works on some cars to get the code(s).

There is a third indicator: the service light (Oilcan + Spanner) (and/or the letters INSP). This appears in the same matrix as the EML.

    (beaten to it!)

InSP appears in the odometer display, not the rev counter display.

    thanks guys

I have the dreaded 2.2 Direct with the misfire problems which get curiouser and curiouser...

I have had the Engine light (emissions fault light) come on twice with fault code P0301 and P0303 Misfire on cylinders 1 and 3.

However, today the Car + Spanner light (MIL, Malfunction Indicator Lamp) came on, but no fault codes were recorded. Switched car on and off and it cleared the light, happened twice while car was cold and then never happened for the rest of my 60 mile journey

I don't want to spend £250 on a new high pressure fuel pump if it is not the problem, but I haven't had any meaningful fault codes appear yet

Is Tech 2 software similar to all the free stuff we have?

    Thanks
