Chirping/rattle from alternator?

I have a chirping/rattle from alternator area.

I took the belt off to make sure it wasn't the tensioner and it isn't that.

The pulley on the alternator seems to move in and out a bit which I think is what causing the noise.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I notice Vauxhall sell a pulley kit for it (As they have a clutch inside) that can be replaced. Anyone replaced the pulley?

Noise from one of the alternator belt pulleys is a reasonably common issue, which is why you can get just the pulley on its own rather than having to swap the whole alternator. Depending on the engine though, it's often the tensioner pulley that's at fault rather than the alternator pulley, so most people get away with just swapping the belt and tensioner, but if that doesn't solve the issue then the alternator pulley is the next thing to swap.

Pulled the belt off and there was no movement in the tensioner but a good 2-3mm play in the alternator pulley.

Just ordered an alternator pully kit from parts connection so will see what it comes with.

Pulley arrived today.

Just need to work out if its possible to remove it inplace.

let me know how you get on lee mines making a noise too i think i have the same fault as yours you tend to notice it more on tick over and low revs

Yeah thats when I hear mine.

I took the belt off and could then feel the play in the pulley.

Had a quick play tonight and the alternator will need to be undone off its mountings so I can 'twist' it upwards so the I can see the end of the pulley and get the tool on it that holds its still whilst I use my smaller impact gun to 'wizz' it off.

how much was the kit from vxl and do you have a part number please ?

if its easy enough to do i will have a go myself

The kit (Its just a pulley and cap) was about £60 but you might get it through one of the Vauxhall parts places cheaper

how did you get on with it lee ? my battery lights come on and now its not charging
