Do you mean the ambient light on the bottom?

It only comes on when it's dark outside so you might have to put a bit of tape over the sensor on the back of the mirror to fool it if you're testing during the day.

Yes I see there's a sensor at the botom of the middle of the mirror and the light under the base of the mirror and a sensor at the left hand rear

The sensor on the mirror side is the one that is looking out the back window for cars behind you dazzling you - ie to dim the mirror. The one looking out the front window is used for the ambient lighting control.

Think you might need headlights on too. I just know that when driving at night there's a pleasant orange glow lighting up the gearstick, heater controls and stereo

I believe it's an led rather than a bulb so shouldn't have blown really, but it does need to be dark. There are 2 sensors on the mirror, one on the front facing the windscreen and one on the mirror surface itself which would detect light from headlights behind you

    Yes its an LED.

With the ignition on fully cover the ambient light sensor that faces out the front windscreen

After about 20 seconds it should come on.

Yep - tested mine when I got in the car to drive home. You need the ignition on and the sensor in the dark for about 10 seconds before it'll come on. Then it'll stay on until it's light for about 20 seconds.
