    Default Z22YH - Wont start

    Hi,

Given how happy I was with my 2006 2.2 Direct SRi Hatchback, I have just replaced my 1996 Mercedes with a 2006 Direct SRi Estate - unfortunatley, that is where the good news ends!

When I bought the car the guy said it tended to cut out so rather than breakdown on teh motorway I elected to replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) and Fuel Pump with new units from Vauxhall.
Unfortunately, with the new parts installed the car doesn't start at all.

The vehicle is currently at the Vauxhall dealer in Slough. The first stage was to run the diagnostics which I believe showed a flat battery. The systems have been charged / codes cleared but still no luck.
They are currently checking the timing and compression and I await their call.

Any suggestions while I watch the bill rise?

    Thank you in advance.
    Shane

    Hi,

Sorry for the delayed response but I didn't get a note.

    Yes, Spins freely.
Seems like on first crank she wants to fire but doesn't Then feels as if it floods and won't fire again.

Vx dealer said the chain has stretched and possibly jumped a tooth.
Compression across all cylinders is 90 versus the expected 150-180.

Dealer reckons new chain and tensioner and another mechanic said possibly sticking valves?

The car has 87k miles and I don't know when/if teh chains were replaced. Looking at the state of the rocker cover I have my doubts the engine has ever been flushed.

Don't want to crack the head and pay for unecessary work/parts so any suggestions appreciated.

    Best
    Shane

Is there actually fuel getting past the pump? Am not sure if the pumps need coding in maybe that's the problem or it's not timed properly. Because if it ran before them parts I'd be having that checked.
After that Have a leak test done and see where it goes from there.
compression is down on cylinders is could be valves.

Vx supposedly tested fuel pressures with the new pump and regulator in place so don't think that is the problem.

Appreciate the compression is low but surely if it was one or more valves the cylinders would have different compression results?

If the timing is out and/or the chain is stretched significantly could that put the valve timing out enough to drop the compression to a consistant 90 confusing the ECU enough that the car won't start?

Fuel tank sender went on mine, but if they've tested the fuel pressure it won't be that. Mine did run with a 'jumped tooth ' chain, Only symptoms were lack of power. Whose decision was it to change pump and fpr?

Any votes on whether I instruct to change the chains / correct the timing or do I go the whole hog and strip the head to check valves?
