Or do some actual fault diagnosis instead of randomly changing components... Take the sensor out but leave it connected, and put the end in a cup of recently boiled water. If the gauge reads then you know it works, and you may have an air lock somewhere if they didn't bleed the system fully...

    What do you mean?

As far as Im aware you cant just change the internal thermostat on the vvt you have to chnage the whole unit, so does it look like they have changed the thermostat? If they have at this time of year it should be right up to temp within 5 minutes due to the far higher ambient temp.

Think they have just changed the sender unit, you need to get the whole unit changed, they are expensive on the vvt, maybe why they just tried the sender first. I'll have a quick look, think you can pick up a whole unit for around £65.

Going by that pic, they haven't actually changed the stat at all... just a hose connection. The stat itself is the circular bit in the middle - so if it had failed as you suspect, then it's still sat in there, wide open, doing nothing but taking up space and costing you money as it'll not be helping to bring the engine up to correct temp so it can work at it's best.

The sender is the thin gold coloured cylinder to the bottom left of the pic.

The VVT boys on here should be able to tell you how to change the correct parts and how easy/hard it is.

AS I understand it, the temperature gauge is not moving, and you suspect the thermostat. Normally I'd do what Penfold 101 said with the sender unit, and if possible, do the same with the thermostat itself, to see if it opens and closes.
Generally is thermostat, but not always, sometimes it's just a bad connection somewhere.
