As above which is best and what to look out for also is it best to change cambelt at 40k rather than the 80 Vx recommends.

6 and 2 3's as they say. The 1.8 16v is the most reliable engine across the Vec range, purely as it has the least to go wrong with it. 16v is 120bhp, VVt is 140bhp. VVt can suffer from a noisy rattle on start up, personally 10k oil and filter changes for these engines are better than the 20k/yearly VX recommend. 16v is 6 years or 60k, vvt 10 years or 100k(sorry but that's a joke imo). I did the belt on my 16v at 6 years and 44k and tbh it was in perfect condition, for the vvt id say 60k was more than long enough to be on the safe side.
also from what I've seen on this site, the z18xe is allot cheaper to fix that the z18xer (vvt) when it comes to engine problems.
Oil lift problem on start up (vvt) there is a brief on here about it, goes away within 2 mins, 1.8 pulls bottom end , 1.8vvt higher revs.
Timing belt run on the xer vvt is a much better design than the xe engine cars as the waterpump is no longer driven off it, mine had its first belt at 107k!!!!! Woulnt bother changing it before 80k on a vvt.
I have the 1.8 vvti, it also has the rattle on start-up (mightly annoying- but apparently harmless), other than the rattle car is faultless, 06, 65k and runs like a dream, hydraulic tappets are a little noisy.
can`t fault mine either.
Now a second car but 119k in 4 and a half years and total outlay bar servicing is a thermostat, no moans here.
