Default mounting additional aerials - ham/cb/commercial antennas

what other solutions have other signum/vectra users come up with to mount additional antennas to their vehicles?

The neatest I can come up with at the moment is a stick on window antenna but I'm told that these loose a lot on performance and output because of the wireless style of the kit.

    Your thoughts appreciated

Mine has one of these on the rear window for the hands free, the wire is slightly visible on the inside of top of boot when you open it, then its hidden in the roof, so its all tucked away neatly and the signal has always been excellent for me

I'd say either mag mount or boot/hatch mount

    boot/hatch

    mag

or go old school and drill a hole in roof/boot and mount it direct.

i popped into LAM in Barnsley today and the advice was that a boot hatch will not work normally, I will have to mount it vertically on the side of the boot door as the Signum doesnt have the same flat edges as the vectra.

I think I might go old school and fit one properly, I intend to keep the car for some time and I don't see why not, providing the job is done properly it should be fine.

Has anybody drilled and mounted one in the roof before?

Someone I knew had them mounted on the tailgate of a Signum, bodywork does shield the
signal a bit, but whatever your doing if you don't fit it in the middle of the roof is a compramise.

Depends on what you're doing.. your car becomes the groundplane of the antenna so if mounted on the boot radiation pattern is more directional towards front and if mounted on the center of the roof it's more omnidirectional... if you're doing long distance cb/ham then roof's the better option.. if it's just local stuff I'd go with the boot.. easier coax run and less to remove to fit..also easier to repair if you sell the car.

Second that the roof is the better place rather than drilling holes as you can take the mag mount off for privecy.

Where and what rig are you going to mount in you car? and have you powered it direct to battery or cig lighter?

Amazing how cb radio is making a come back what goes around comes around.

If you do it in the right place, you could install a cheap mobile phone antenna in the hole if you sell the car or get a fake stick on shark fin

    good thinking batman!

Its not for CB but 2mtr and 70cm tx - im getting a used Kenwood I think but if not my second choice is new Yaesu. The other option I was considering was mounting a roof bar but I cant usually stand the front one being on as it whistles like crazy! im not sure if the back will whistle if its on its own.

Im interested to hear from those in the know about the portotion of effect of positioning on the antenna.

I would rather drill just to the side of the existing signum radio antenna and mount my dual band antenna, its of similar length at 5/8 or 1/2 wave, covered in a black finishing so it will look really nice but if the different of rearward projection is massive then I will have to rethink my design, I could centre mount it which im sure if the perfect solution but will look like crap.

Im sure some of you are thinking any second aerial is crap looking wherever it is but im sure some effort can be made to position it correctly and get it looking 90% normal.
