Default Am I allowed to ask mechanical questions about a BMW here?

    Hello all

I was not sure if its allowed to ask for technical problems on a car my friend wanted to buy, which I have just test drove for him.

Can I ask away as I know many members have very good knowledge regarding cars in general not just Vectra's or hang my head in shame for putting forward such a stupid question

    Thanks

    Thanks very much guys.

The car is a 1998 BMW 528i. 83k generaly very good condition for it year.

The car drove really well. No knocks no judder under braking. Smooth as anything at 70 +. Pulled along lovely. All seemed to go really well until .....

Near the end of about a 8 mile test drive the temp gauge started to rise then fall then rise again.

I stopped the car and left it running with the Aircon going about 18 degrees on a medium fan speed.

The Temp shot up after a few mins to the red and two leaks appeared.

One at the front right under the engine (Slightly brown and oily fluid) and the other mid way down the car which was almost like water (that one confused me)

Both puddles were about a foot in diameter.

He said he is going to get it looked at and fixed tomorrow and then we can see where we are.

MOT history listed corroded brake pipes since 2008 as advisory but never a fail.

Should we just walk away or wait for him to back to us.

What could be the leak from half way down the car.

    Many thanks for any help

the clear will be condensation from A/C the rusty brown will be the one that need sorting sounds to me like it has a leak that has lead to an airlock that's why the temp will flutter up and down

Thank you very much Mark. The middle leak and temp flutter now makes more sense to me.

I think we will wait and see what news he has for us tomorrow. He seemed like a genuine person with lots of reciepts and paperwork that was all in order. HE has also owned the car for the last seven years.

If the temp gauge is fluctuating and theres a leak possibly with brown oily water then i would walk away probably head gasket failure or something along those lines. A check of the coolant bottle and a check of under the oil cap/dipstick could have confirmed that.
