good clean earth terminal

Hi,
Could anyone point me in the right direction for buying the cables/connectors/screws?.

I basically need to charge my leisure battery in my boot whilst on holiday. I have this device already, and is installed in my boot; facilitates power to my caravan. http://www.psb-towing.com/shop/image...lay_ZR1220.jpg


There is a spare terminal, terminal 2. Which I will use to charge my leisure battery when we go on trips. We are going to site with no elec hook up you see! The positive cable with crock clip will attach to the pos battery terminal.


My issue is, I need to create a good clean Earth terminal on the body work, somewhere in my boot, for the neg battery to connect to. I plan to grind some paint off and use self tapping screw. Is this correct method?

Is there a cable kit I could buy somewhere? Below is a basic line diagram of what I want to achieve. Looking for a method of connecting the main crock cables to possible spade connections so I don’t have to wire in every time?

would that be the boot side, or passanger side? sorry for dumb question, i pressume boot? what CSA of cable will i require? any reccomendations on connectors for quick connection?

Cable etc can be got from Maplin.

Failing that, maybe a local motor factors, or boatyard...

EDIT: For charging batteries, you need to try and keep the cable runs as short as poss and use as thick as practical cable, so you don't get laqrge voltage drops and inadequate charging. There's no point an alternator voltage regulator seeing 14.4V and the battery being at 13.8 due to inadequate cable sizing. It's something we have to deal with in boats - I have over 1000Ah of domestic batteries and I want them to charge properly. We generally use 25sq.mm (4awg) cable, but this is probably a little OTT for you!!

Maybe the cheapest source of cable would be 40 or 60A cooker cable. I'd be looking at 40A as a minimum. You could start to get unnecessarily technical by finding out what the voltage drop would be using some tables / calculators etc., but I wouldn't bother.

There's already several good earth points in the car, one behind each kick panel in the front, two in the boot behind the lights and a couple up under the dashboard amongst others. Just look for big bunches of brown wires all attached to the chassis

ive take a pic in my rear light cavity, from boot. the bolt i have the red arrow pointing to, is this the point that you refer too?

should i use a bit of emory paper to strip back some paint arond that bolt for better conectivity?

No, that's one of the screws holding the light fitting on, look lower down near the bottom, not sure exactly where they are on the hatch but that's where they are in the saloon. On the estate they are under the flap on the boot floor behind the carpet.

OK, i think i found it, your right it was lower, very awkward to get to, too!

might just go for the seatbelt point, and rub it back for a better conection.

nothing by me, but possibly the towbar company may have used that earth terminal for the caravan electrics
