Mk4 Astra help please

My friend has:

Mk 4 Astra
1.7 TDI SXI

It appears the ECU needs replacing. What is the most cost effective way of getting this replaced? I'm thinking Autovaux maybe of scrappie?... VX apparently charge £700. As the car is a 53 plate VX wont be getting this business!

Why does the ecu need replacing? If you went to a scrappy u would need to get the ecu both keys and the car pass and it would probably need programming as well . U could also try getting the ecu repaired

I don't know the if's and but's of the scenario only that is needs sorting. Is there specialists for ECU repairs at all?... I've never had this problem so just thought the good folk on here would know the cheapest and best solution
